KSB provides new energy to a 40-year-old combined heat and power plant
Since 1982, Handelöverket has provided heat for Norrköping and the surrounding area. New demands on function and durability meant that the plant's old split-case district heat pumps needed to be modernized. A real challenge, as the two new pumps had to fit the existing piping. The solution? It was on the other side of the Atlantic, in a pumping plant that KSB Canada had constructed.

One of Sweden's largest combined heat and power plants
Since 1982, two split-case district heat pumps at the E.ON-owned Händelöverket have supplied Norrköping with district heating. To ensure that the hot water continues to heat the city, the pumps have now been replaced with new ones from KSB.
A necessary replacement of pumps
The pumps are a type of bottom-suction pump and differ from modern pumps in that they do not have inlets and outlets in line. Instead, they have inlets from below and outlets to the side, which is very unusual today.
The solution was found in Canada
In Canada, an almost identical pump plant with bottom-suction pumps was found, which matched Händelöverket's specifications perfectly.
A long-lasting solution with new splitcase pumps
- We were very happy with the old pumps, so it was important for us to keep the original design. Of course, the new pumps would be updated and adapted to the needs of the future, says Jonas Viklund.
A successful project is spelled collaboration
- KSB has delivered on time and fulfilled our wishes and requirements from the start. We have felt secure in their ability to meet our expectations for support, process and technology throughout the project, he says.
- All projects have their challenges, of course, but with our long and accumulated experience from international projects, we have developed a solid ability to handle and solve even the most complex projects, concludes Frida.
Success factors during the project:
- Several joint meetings on site at KSB's factory in Halle, Germany, and at Handelöverket have been favorable to the project.
- The close dialogue between KSB's engineers from both Germany and Sweden as well as E.ON that went on for several years before the project.
- Clarity in the specifications for the project.
- Minimal modification thanks to previous experience from similar projects, which leads to a more cost-effective process.
- Long-term and good customer relationship where KSB continuously provides support and service.
