Why does IE3 classification not make sense for submersible motor pumps?
The combination of high-efficiency motors and non-clogging impellers enables waste water pumps to achieve very high overall levels of efficiency. Find out here why submersible motor pumps take on a special role in the assessment of energy efficiency.

Current EU regulations for pumps and motors
Lot 11 | Electric motors | Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781, Amendment 4/2014 (PN 0.75-375 kW, 2-pole to 8-pole) |
Circulating pumps | Commission Regulations (EC) No 641/2009, (EU) No 622/2012 | |
Water pumps | Commission Regulation (EU) No 547/2012 |
Lot 11 | Water pumps | Commission Regulation (EU) No 547/2012, incorporation of studies from lots 28 & 29 (waste water & large pumps) |
Lot 30 | Products in motor systems | All products not comprised in Commission Regulation (EU) 2019/1781; preliminary study completed, implementation in a regulation currently in progress |
Submersible motor pumps take on a special role
- There is no standardised mechanical interface between the pump and the motor.
- The pump and the motor share the same bearings.
- The motor is water-tight and can operate continuously immersed (IP68).
- The pumped water dissipates the motor heat.
- The main area of application is waste water.
- They are primarily used in wet installation with a duckfoot bend.

Small savings potential of submersible motors
Impeller types optimised for specific applications and trimming the impeller to meet customer requirements offer plenty of scope for achieving savings.
The design of submersible motors influences their efficiency
How to determine the efficiency of submersible motors
Naturally highly energy efficient: KSB's submersible motor pumps Amarex, Amarex KRT and Amarex N
The only sensible way forward: "wire-to-water efficiency"
Suitable products
Amarex
Vertical single-stage submersible motor pump for wet installation, with vortex impeller (F-max) or open dual-vane impeller (D-max), stationary or transportable version. Single-stage, single-entry close-coupled pump sets which are not self-priming. ATEX-compliant version available.
Amarex KRT
Horizontal or vertical single-stage submersible motor pump in close-coupled design, with various next-generation impeller types, for wet or dry installation, stationary or transportable version, with energy-saving motor and models for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Amarex NS
Vertical single-stage submersible motor pump for wet installation, with cutter (S), stationary or transportable version. Amarex N pumps are floodable, single-stage, single-entry close-coupled pump sets which are not self-priming. ATEX-compliant version available.
