Hard Rock Mining

Hard rock mining operations demand equipment capable of handling abrasive slurries, high solids concentrations, and extreme operating conditions. From mine dewatering and grinding circuits to flotation, tailings transport, and metal recovery, reliable pump systems are essential to maintaining production and controlling operating costs.
Whether processing copper, iron ore, gold, zinc, or nickel, GIW® slurry pumps and KSB non-slurry pumps deliver dependable performance throughout the mineral processing circuit.

Maximize Uptime and Productivity in Hard Rock Mining

KSB's GIW® slurry pump solutions are specifically engineered for the challenges of hard rock mining. Combining patented hydraulic designs, advanced wear-resistant materials, and decades of mineral processing expertise, KSB helps mining operations improve equipment life, reduce maintenance requirements, and maximize plant availability.
Our global engineering and service network works closely with mining operators to optimize pumping systems throughout the entire process cycle. Using advanced system modeling tools, including JK Simmet, along with pump selection tools like GIW® SLYsel, we evaluate operating conditions and identify the most efficient pumping solution for every application.
Our pumps are employed in the following hard rock mining applications:

pic-copper

Copper Mining Applications

GIW® slurry pumps and KSB non-slurry pumps support every stage of copper production, from groundwater control and mine dewatering at the pit through grinding, flotation, and tailings transport in the concentrator. They are also commonly used in heap leaching operations to handle chemical solutions and pregnant leach liquor, as well as throughout refinery processes where reliable fluid handling is critical to maintaining production efficiency and maximizing equipment life.
GIW® slurry pumps deliver exceptional reliability

Gold Mining Applications

Gold processing facilities utilize GIW® slurry pumps and KSB non-slurry pumps throughout the mining and beneficiation process, including mine dewatering, cyclone feed, flotation circuits, process water management, and tailings transport. Within carbon-in-leach (CIL) operations, KSB's pumps reliably handle reactor feed, tails streams, barren solutions, pregnant solutions, and bleed circuits, providing dependable performance in critical gold recovery applications.
pic-Iron Ore

Iron Ore Mining Applications

Iron ore operations depend on reliable slurry transport across some of the most demanding applications in mineral processing. GIW® slurry pumps and KSB non-slurry pumps are used throughout the mine and concentrator, handling cyclone feed, mill discharge, flotation circuits, tailings, thickener underflow, screening operations, and final product transfer. In agglomeration and pelletizing circuits, they support concentrate dewatering, thickener services, and fine screening applications, helping operators maximize throughput while minimizing unplanned downtime.
pic-Zinc & Nickel

Zinc & Nickel Mining Applications

GIW® slurry pumps and KSB non-slurry pumps provide comprehensive coverage throughout zinc and nickel operations, supporting everything from groundwater control and mine dewatering to cyclone feed, flotation, grinding, screening, concentrate transfer, and tailings management. Additional applications include concentrate dewatering and thickener overflow and underflow services, where durable pump construction and advanced wear materials help improve equipment reliability and reduce maintenance requirements.

Success Story: Reducing Downtime at BHP Olympic Dam

The historical pump installed was failing prematurely between 1,600 – 1,800 hours of operation, which resulted in unplanned maintenance shutdowns. BHP required an alternate solution to reduce shutdowns and maintenance costs. KSB was invited to the mine site to take part in a performance-based trial of their best-in-class cyclone feed pump. Following a detailed analysis of the installation requirements, slurry characteristics and performance requirements KSB Australia recommended a GIW® MDX450 mill duty slurry pump.

Digital Solutions Designed for Efficiency

GIW® RAMSL - A mechanized system designed to simplify the adjustment of the impeller nose clearance, which is vital for optimal wear performance. Traditionally, this adjustment requires a team using hydraulic wrenches, but with RAMSL the adjustment can now be made with the push of a button.
GIW® SLYsight - An IoT technology that allows pump operators to observe what's happening inside the pump. SLYsight monitors critical aspects like internal clearances, crucial for managing wear. The data provided by SLYsight leads to informed maintenance decisions and improved pump longevity.
