At a well-recognized copper mine in New Mexico, a conventional flotation circuit helps process approximately 36,000 metric tons of ore per day to produce copper concentrate. As the circuit separates valuable minerals from waste material, it must continuously discharge tailings and move them toward the tailings dam. These tailings present a pumping challenge. Additives and flocculants used during flotation introduce significant amounts of air bubbles into the slurry, creating frothy conditions that can interfere with pumping performance. Reliably handling this frothy material is critical to maintaining throughput and keeping the flotation circuit running.
In mining and mineral processing operations, sump liquid levels rarely remain constant as the inflow of slurry and process water fluctuates. Vertical slurry pumps serving these sumps must continue to perform reliably as liquid levels rise and fall.
KSB developed the new GIW® VMD vertical slurry pump to provide a flexible and durable solution in these demanding environments. Designed for wastewater and medium-abrasion slurry service, the GIW® VMD is especially suited to hard rock mining applications such as wash-down sumps, slurry processing, water transfer, and tailings disposal.
At one of the largest gold mines in Mexico, the arid conditions in the region mean clean water is expensive and hard to come by. Therefore, mechanical seals are the preferred sealing solution for slurry and non-slurry pumps alike. Most GIW® Slurry Pumps operating at site already feature single mechanical seals with a grease quench, both supplied by a leading third-party seal OEM. However, the client reported challenges with supply of spare parts and support from the seal OEM, leading them to seek alternative suppliers for these seals.
Proven Performance, Modernized Design Since the late 1980s, the GIW® LCC pump has been a trusted solution in industries moving abrasive slurries. Designed for medium-abrasion duties, the GIW® LCC has built a worldwide reputation for combining durability, cost efficiency, and reliable performance. Now, KSB GIW, Inc. is proud to introduce the GIW® LCC Gen2 Series, a modernized version of this proven workhorse that preserves the trusted hydraulics of the original while making operation and maintenance simpler than ever.
