Dewatering Solutions for an Australian Mine
Situated in Western Australia, the Newcrest Telfer Mine extracts gold, copper, and silver. The mine consists of the Main Dome, West Dome open pits, and underground mines.
Background
Newcrest Mining Ltd. planned to shift their operations from the Main Dome open pit back to the West Dome open pit. A critical challenge they faced was the high-water level at the West Dome, which required a thorough dewatering process before resuming operations.
The Challenge
Newcrest sought a high-performance solution for dewatering, specifically looking for a high flow, high head bore hole pump. Traditionally reliant on alternative brand pumps, Newcrest faced constraints with on-site support and material availability, prompting them to consider alternative suppliers. The uncertainty about how much flow the bores would yield in the draw down tests further complicated their efforts. They required a pump capable of servicing all five bores for the testing phase, prompting them to request pricing from KSB for a suitable test pump.
The Solution
KSB presented a comprehensive solution featuring an UPAS300-094/09DD 400kW borehole pump, designed to deliver a flow of 100 liters per second at a head of 325 meters. The package also included screened cable and a motor cooler, ensuring the units could function efficiently below the inlet screens. The test pump arrived in December 2020, marking the start of the bore testing phase. Contrary to initial estimates, the yield from all bores exceeded expectations, necessitating a revision of the overall hydraulic design. KSB adjusted their proposal accordingly and successfully secured the main supply order in February 2021.
In summary, KSB‘s tailored approach to addressing the complex dewatering needs at the Telfer Mine highlights the importance of adaptability and precision in mining operations. By providing a solution that surpassed initial expectations, KSB enabled Newcrest to optimize their dewatering process, thereby facilitating a smoother transition back to the West Dome open pit.
