Grey water pumps. Short explained.

This is how grey water and waste water pumps work

Grey water pumps and also waste water pumps are submersible pumps. This means they are usually completely submerged in the fluid to be handled. Wear-resistant mechanical seals are used as a shaft seal.

The pumps transport contaminated water with an impeller (e.g. with vanes). Depending on the fluid composition, different impeller types such as vortex impellers or mixed flow impellers are used in the pump. They ensure an optimum pump performance without any clogging. The flow rate and head of a waste water pump depend on the motor rating and on the type of fluid to be handled. On average, the flow rate is between three and five litres per second. The head can be several metres high, depending on the motor rating. A grey water pump with an open impeller or channel impeller can transport waste water containing solids with a diameter of up to 70 millimetres. The impeller and pump are usually driven by electric motors.

Submersible pumps are usually controlled by a float switch. A grey water pump with integrated float responds to rising or falling water levels by starting the pump up or stopping it. KSB’s waste water pumps are usually controlled by a modern electronic level control system or a magnetic float switch.

Strengths and applications of KSB’s grey water and waste water pumps

Grey water lifting units and pumps by KSB transport waste water, drain excess stormwater, help dry flooded areas or irrigate fields in agriculture. They are also employed in mining, waterworks and seawater desalination plants.

Cities and communities also make use of tailored KSB solutions for reliable and economical waste water treatment. KSB works jointly with municipalities, designers and operators to develop future-proof solutions.
