Liquid cooling: Cooling technology for the AI era

The AI boom in recent years has massively increased the global demand for computing power. Data centres around the world operate at full capacity around the clock, relying on increasingly powerful chips, which in turn generate significantly more waste heat than their predecessors. As a result, more and more data centres are switching from traditional air cooling for their servers to liquid cooling using a water-glycol mixture, which is up to four times more efficient.  
Manufacturers of cooling distribution units (CDUs) use one of the following liquid cooling methods: 
  • Rear-Door Heat Exchanger (RDHX): In this hybrid system combining air and liquid cooling, coolant is channelled through heat exchangers at the rear of the server rack, right where the heat is generated. Proven, scalable, ideal for new and existing data centres.
     
  • Direct-to-Chip (D2C): Cold plates channel the coolant directly over the CPU (central processing unit) and GPU (graphics processing unit). Maximum thermal efficiency for high-density AI clusters with rack powers exceeding 100 kW.
     
  • Immersion cooling: All the server hardware is submerged in dielectric fluid. Maximum heat dissipation – next-generation technology for extreme conditions.

As part of our critical infrastructure, data centres are subject to particularly stringent requirements with regard to redundancy and system availability. Depending on their classification as Tier I to Tier IV, systems are permitted only a few hours or minutes of unplanned downtime per year. 
The EtaSeco canned motor pump is hermetically sealed and absolutely leak-proof. Its robust design guarantees reliable operation over a service life of 30 years.
