KSB's 150 years of success: facts and milestones

Innovation and growth: KSB’s 150-year history in a nutshell

Mechanical engineer Johannes Klein designed his automatic steam traps in 1871 with the aim of increasing efficiency. His invention captured the steam generated by steam engines and fed it back into a boiler in the form of water. With this product, he laid the foundations of the present KSB Group in the same year with two other fellow entrepreneurs, Friedrich Schanzlin and Jakob Becker.

Innovative product development

KSB: a company built on innovation

It all started with what KSB continues to mean today: a team of people passionate about their work, focused on efficiency and functionality – just as the company's motto suggests: people, passion, performance.

The first patent: efficiency is a fundamental principle

Johannes Klein develops a boiler feed apparatus and installs it at the Frankenthal Joint Stock Brewery. The brewery’s director Friedrich Schanzlin and the financier and brick manufacturer Jakob Becker are impressed by the invention. Together with Klein, they found the company Frankenthaler Maschinen- & Armaturen-Fabrik Klein, Schanzlin und Becker.

1871

Corporate development

The beginnings

During the years following its foundation in 1871, the company throve thanks to its innovative approaches and focus on functionality. Shortly afterwards, in 1887, the company was transformed into a public limited company and the founder, Johannes Klein, took over management.

1890

Durable, reliable products

From the very outset, the company has focused on developing timeless, durable products. This led, for example, to the production of the UNA steam- or belt-driven double-acting plunger pumps in 1890, which used only a single gland packing, for which it was named. One of its key features was its durability.

1924

From company to Group

Under the management of Jacob Klein, the company expands on two continents. During National Socialism and the Second World War, KSB is a supplier for the military. In addition to classic fields of application, KSB products and developments are used in automotive production, shipbuilding, aviation and rocket engineering.

1930

Energy savings since the 1930s

In 1935, KSB launched its first energy-efficient pump type series, the Eta single-stage volute casing pumps for industrial applications.

1963

Technological breakthrough: RDL 900 water pump

Developed in 1963, the water pump was a technological breakthrough due to its ability to provide good efficiency and a long service life despite its large size.

1975

Environmental protection: the fight against noise

Noise is also a form of environmental pollution, which is why KSB engineers have made it a priority to develop pumps with particularly low noise levels, to protect the environment. To this end, they built an acoustic centre in Frankenthal in 1975 to work on the continuous reduction of the noise level of KSB pumps.

2002

The global company

The end of the 20th century was also characterised by growth, with KSB expanding in the Americas, Asia, and Europe, entering important new markets and making acquisitions that expanded its portfolio of products and services.

By 2002, KSB had a total of 27 production sites, with offices and subsidiaries in more than 100 countries.

2010

Sustainability

Sustainability plays a fundamental role in all of KSB’s decisions. Accordingly, in 2010 the company joined the UN Global Compact, the UN's worldwide corporate sustainability initiative. KSB is thus committed to supporting social and ecological globalisation following the initiative’s guidelines.

2012

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency has been a KSB benchmark since 2012. That is when the MegaCPK standardised chemical pump was developed: the innovative and tried-and-tested pump series offering higher energy efficiency and greater reliability, manufactured to uniform standards throughout the KSB Group.

2018

Customer focus

Our aim is to offer even more services, as at KSB customers are at the heart of everything we do. To serve them even better and following expansion in Europe, KSB has been expanding its service network in the United States since 2018.

2020

Future and sustainability

Sustainable growth and future-oriented digitalisation have enabled KSB to continuously evolve over the decades. This remains the goal going forward, which is why the company has launched a reverse engineering service for its spare parts supply, and a new consultancy and test centre for additive manufacturing (3D printing processes) at its Pegnitz site, Germany, in 2020.

High quality: national and international certificates

KSB operates worldwide according to the latest quality standards, so KSB Hungary Kft. also places great emphasis on high quality, as affirmed by numerous certificates.

At KSB, the manufacturing of premium quality products and the provision of outstanding services are always a priority. That is why we follow uniform quality standards in line with the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Model of Excellence.

To ensure the high quality and coordinated performance of KSB Hungary Kft.'s tasks, the company's management is committed to the development, operation and continuous improvement of a quality management system that meets the requirements of the MSZ EN ISO 9001:2015 standard.

Since July 2013, the company has been operating within the KSB Group's Integrated Management System. This quality programme means more extensive supervision, which applies comprehensively to all KSB subsidiaries worldwide. Among others, this is also a guarantee that we provide our partners with the highest possible level of service.

KSB is especially proud of the fact that both the company and its products are praised by our partners.

In 2007, Paks Nuclear Power Plant Ltd. issued KSB its certificate of compliance, which confirms that KSB meets all of the company’s safety requirements. Thanks to the successful cooperation between the partners, the certificate was extended in 2013.

In 2002, KSB was awarded the special prize at the Industria international industrial trade fair for its BOA-Control IMS balancing valve.
