Biodiesel is biodegradable, non-toxic and produces considerably less emissions during combustion than mineral oil based diesel fuel. Biodiesel can be used in standard diesel engines. Ethanol is referred to as bioethanol when it has been exclusively produced from biomass (renewable carbonaceous material) or the biodegradable parts of waste and is intended for use as biofuel.
Second generation biofuels
While first generation biofuels are produced from plant matter with a high oil and starch content, second generation biofuels use organic waste. Using this type of waste means that no greenhouse gases are produced, as there is no need to grow crops and cultivate agricultural land. Second generation biofuels contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and are not produced from raw materials which also serve as food.
