The new generation of the HPK-L hot water and heat transfer fluid pumps

Proven in operation and continuously optimised: the latest generation of the proven HPK-L hot water and heat transfer fluid pump is now available. The pump can be operated at extremely high temperatures – entirely without additional cooling devices. Thanks to its robust and continuously improved design, it offers excellent operating reliability. 

The HPK-L hot water and heat transfer fluid pump is being continually improved by KSB specialists. It can be used in a wide range of applications and stands for a high level of operating reliability thanks to innovative technology.

Design and application

  • Horizontal, radially split pump in back pull-out design

With 49 sizes on offer, it is now possible to select just the right pump from the new generation HPK-L range that can be operated close to the best efficiency point (BEP). Thanks to suction-side and discharge-side flange connections to EN 1092-1 (optionally drilled to ASME B 16.5), the pump is highly flexible. The HPK-L from KSB: safe and reliable

Handling hot water and heat transfer fluids means that the pump is subjected to extreme thermal loads and chemical attacks. However, HPK-L’s design has been optimally developed to cope with these special conditions. The materials selected for components subjected to demanding fluids and pressure levels, e.g. casing, impeller and casing wear rings, are capable of withstanding extreme loads.

Like other heat transfer fluid and hot water pumps from the
Eta-SYT pump range, the HPK-L is fitted with a patented VenJet® venting chamber. VenJet® ensures that gases contained in the fluid handled are reliably dissipated from around the mechanical seal area, thus preventing dry running.

As well as single mechanical seals, it is also possible to choose double mechanical seals in a tandem arrangement which are used in especially demanding applications involving synthetic heat transfer fluids.

A service life of up to 25,000 operating hours is ensured by two angular contact ball bearings in back-to-back arrangement sealed on both sides and mounted at the “cold” end of the shaft.

The air-cooled bearing bracket with heat barrier and fan impeller eliminates the need for an additional cooling device: the mechanical seal is reliably shielded from the hot operating section of the pump set and the bearing bracket is protected. Discharge-side casing wear rings and balancing holes in the impeller help to reduce the axial load and increase the service life of the bearings. As they are fully confined, the gaskets are protected against extrusion damage.

The HPK-L is an extra-safe option: in cases of leakage at the inboard mechanical seal, a quench fluid prevents vaporisation of the fluid handled at the sealing clearance. The escaping fluid handled is discharged into the quench system.

Saving energy with HPK-L

As well as reliability, HPK-L ensures extremely energy-efficient operation. KSB specialists have further improved the flow passage in the hydraulic section to ensure high efficiencies.

Whatever the application, energy-saving pump operation can be achieved with the HPK-L thanks to the range of different sizes and the possibility of trimming the impeller to match the required duty point as standard.

Using the HPK-L with the innovative KSB SuPremE® motor in combination with the wall-mounted or cabinet-mounted PumpDrive variable speed system allows you to get the best out of your system - whatever the load profile. This configuration means that HPK-L is already operating at IE4 level (as per IEC (CD) 60034-30 Ed. 2).

Equipped with a heat barrier and a fan impeller, the pump’s design eliminates the need for external cooling, which ensures additional energy savings and a high level of availability. The HPK-L design is particularly easy to service: all pump sizes have casing covers which are bolted to the bearing bracket and volute casing. To facilitate dismantling, the casing covers are also fitted with forcing screws. The HPK-L’s modular design furthermore reduces maintenance costs.
