Celebrating KSB Pumps’ 25th Anniversary!
KSB Pumps Inc., based in Mississauga Ontario, is a member of the KSB Group, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of industrial pumps, valves and related systems. With a company history that dates back to 1871 in Germany, the KSB Group is one of the most experienced pump manufacturers worldwide. Since 1989, KSB Pumps Inc. (KSB Canada) has provided Canadian industrial and municipal customers with access to the company’s giant product portfolio and the unparalleled expertise of the 143-year-old pump-maker.
KSB Canada has specialized in providing reliable pump solutions for the most challenging applications in industrial and utility power plants, water and wastewater facilities, processing industries and mines. "Close to 50 percent of our installations in Canada are based on highly-engineered large-scale pump systems”, points out Michael Blundell, President and CEO for KSB Canada, "By offering both specialized made-to-order solutions and a growing portfolio of versatile off-the-shelf products, we can offer our customers exactly what they need, at competitive prices."
In the beginning: It all started back in the 1960s - before KSB opened its own offices in Canada - with powerful and rugged boiler feed pumps supplied to many pulp and paper mills in Western Canada by Inproheat, a regional distributor. Even today, more than 50 cogeneration plants in this industry rely on the unsurpassed day-to-day performance of these efficient, low-maintenance veterans. For example, one of North America’s largest biomass power plants, located in British Columbia, generates electrical energy and process heat from sawmill wood waste with the help of a pair of KSB high-pressure multistage boiler feed water pumps. Other KSB high-pressure pumps have been working reliably since the mid-1990s at a landfill energy project north of Toronto, where 119 million cubic metres of methane captured annually powers two 1MW gas turbines and a 30MW steam turbine.
The large and the small:
Since these beginnings, KSB pumps have been used in a wide range of applications. One of the largest pumps ever deployed in Canada is a 38 tonne high-capacity water transport pump for the City of Montreal’s main water treatment plant. This giant pump, sporting a five metre long shaft drive and powered a 5,500 HP motor, is scheduled to be installed this fall, joining five other large KSB pumps that have been in continuous service at the same plant for more than two decades. At the other end of the size range, Pillitteri Estates of Niagara-on-the-Lake, the world’s largest maker of ice wine, has adopted a small Vitachrom pump to power a filtration process that enhances the clarity of its products. Vitachrom pumps are specially designed for the food and beverage industries and are built to accommodate clean-in-place/sterilize-in-place (CIP/SIP) technologies for the food processing equipment.
Energy for the future:
Among the latest Canadian success stories are rugged pumps used in Alberta’s oil sands that will provide the energy-hungry world with fuel for decades to come. KSB Canada’s contribution has included powerful boiler feed pumps used to provide high-pressure steam for the in-situ extraction of bitumen from underground deposits and high-capacity water transport pumps. KSB’s GIW Minerals products are widely used in this region and include heavy-duty slurry pumps that are used to move highly abrasive water/sand/bitumen mixtures through the refinement process.
KSB across Canada:
To serve Canada's expansive landscape, KSB Canada has two regional sales offices, one in Montreal and one in Calgary in addition to the main Canadian sales office located in Mississauga. These three sales offices support a network of regional sales partners and qualified distributors coast-to-coast. KSB Canada also operates a fully equipped service facility in its Mississauga head office and works closely with KSB’s GIW Minerals REGEN Service Centre to offer service support for the oil sands in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
A commitment to the environment
To mark KSB Canada’s 25 years in Canada, the Mississauga-based pump specialist joined the local “One Million Trees Mississauga” initiative (www.onemilliontrees.ca) by planting 150 trees in Canada’s sixth-largest municipality. “Our staff has pitched in to contribute to a greener future for our Canadian home”, says KSB Canada’s CEO and president, Mike Blundell. “By planting six trees for every year since our company was established in Canada (in June 1989), we are giving something back to our community – and also emphasizing KSB’s role as a global leader in energy conservation through pump efficiency.”
Trees make a major contribution to a healthy environment. They absorb carbon dioxide and other gases such as sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide from the air and release oxygen. One large tree can provide a day’s supply of oxygen for four people while capturing up to 13 pounds of carbon each year. “Our 150 trees are only a symbolic gesture”, says Blundell, “but we want to help Mississauga reach its goal of adding one million trees to its tree canopy by 2032.”
“At the same time, we hope to draw attention to our larger efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of pumping systems,” added Blundell. “With pumps consuming approximately 20% of the energy used in the industrial sector, we can see great benefits in helping the designers and managers of industrial or municipal facilities enhance the energy efficiency of the equipment they operate.”
