Piping water instead of oil in Iraq: KSB supplies fresh water to millions
To tackle the urgent demand for clean drinking water in Basra, KSB partnered with provincial authorities. Now, more than 150 water pumps are supplying drinking water to the city and its surroundings.
supplying drinking water to Basra and nearby communities in Iraq
Basra is the third-largest city in Iraq. It was once known as the “Venice of the East” because of its numerous water canals and bridges. But this is no longer the case today, as the Shatt al-Arab and its tributaries have become heavily polluted with algae, bacteria, chemicals and waste. The water network is also outdated and mixes at some points with the equally outdated sewage network.
Between August and November 2018, the situation became so severe that more than 100,000 Iraqis in and around Basra were poisoned due to contaminated drinking water. Residents took to the streets for weeks to protest against the shortage of water.
The Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources responded with a comprehensive plan to address the problems of salinity and pollution in Basra province. The plan includes several measures, including the construction of a dam in northern Basra to prevent further salination of the river water.

Basra Water Authority is responsible for supplying clean drinking water to over 1 million people in southern Iraq.
delivering a large number of pumps to a crisis area in record time
This high-stakes project would have a significant impact, not only for the people of Basra province but also for KSB.
In a country whose infrastructure has been heavily damaged by wars and civil unrest, one of the main priorities for the project was evident: the new pumps needed to deliver much higher higher quantities of water than before. Old and defective pumps would be replaced to ensure that clean water could flow reliably to residents in the province.
For KSB, the project was a chance to demonstrate its expertise and ability to deliver: first, the pumps had to arrive quickly – already in summer 2019 – to prevent another flare-up of protests. Second, their impressive performance and quality would establish KSB as a reliable pump supplier and ideally result in follow-up orders.
more than 150 pumps for the rapid renewal of a run-down water network
The governorate initially awarded the contract for this project to one of KSB’s competitors who had offered to deliver the products within 22 weeks. But after giving our assurance that we would be able to deliver within the same time frame, the customer finally chose KSB for the superior quality of our products.
Within the short delivery window, we delivered 130 Omega pumps, 22 RDLO pumps and six KRT pumps with starter panels. Most importantly, the name KSB is now associated with solving Basra’s water problem – and KSB will be the preferred supplier of pumps and valves for future projects in Basra and Iraq.
