In Germany alone, some 20 million tonnes of sugar beet are turned into sugar every year. From beet to sugar – that’s quite a few process steps. After the beets have been harvested and washed, the sugar contained in the plant cells has to be extracted. The extracted juice is then purified, concentrated and crystallised. Apart from that, the remaining substances are also processed further. Service water from the sugar production process is treated biologically.
