Model pump tests

Turning visions into reality ...

In the fluid dynamics of centrifugal pumps, the so-called similarity laws derived from Euler's equations apply. Their use allows experimental data obtained on reduced scale models to be accurately extrapolated for geometrically similar full scale equipment.

This is the basis of all hydraulic development work in the design of pumps and turbines.

The method is even successfully employed to demonstrate the achievable hydraulic performance of machines much too large to be tested in the plant (for guarantee acceptance testing using model testing see for example IEC code No. 497).

Models may even be used to visualise flow phenomena (such as cavitation) by installing viewing windows, which would not be allowed on the full scale machine.
