Pump configurations for wastewater treatment

Canadian Process Equipment & Control News, June 2009

Pumps in wastewater treatment facilities often have to cope with a lot more than wastewater. Solid materials, such as chunks of wood, plastic or rubber can cause blockages and jamming. Fibrous solids (pieces of cloth, string or rope, sanitary products and plant materials, etc.) can build up around the throat of the impeller, blocking the flow and degrading effi ciency. Abrasive materials, like sand, gravel and industrial waste, act over time, eroding impeller vanes and degrading the efficiency of the pumps. Choosing the right configuration of pump and impeller can go a long way to dealing with these challenges.
